'Quite Simply the Greatest' Lively and unassuming Brigadiers bar is the ideal place to catch up with friends away from the madding crowd. So picture yourself with a glass of champagne and not a care in the world. Within the grounds of Swynford Paddocks, Brigadier Gerard lays to rest. For many, he was the greatest racehorse of the 20th Century. Unfashionably bred, he won 17 of his 18 races, being beaten only by the Derby winner Roberto at York in 1972, a race in which both horses beat the track record. A resolute galloper, he won the best 2,000 Guineas of the century by trouncing Mill Reef and My Swallow in 1971. A full list of the Brigadiers races are on the wall of the bar, along with a superb oil painting from James Power, and a display cabinet which houses the actual saddle used by jockey Joe Mercer in all of his races aboard the Brigadier. Footnote; On a close inspection of the Brigadiers breeding chart, you will see that on his sires side a few generations back, a horse called SWYNFORD was part of the cycle - How very apt.
